There are many e-cargo bikes; Specialized is certainly not the first. They have taken their traditional approach of really considering what the rider wants from this sort of bike, even if they don’t know it until they experience it. 

With its powerful, zero-drag, custom-tuned, 90nm motor, large 710Wh battery, and Gates belt drive, you’ve a bike that can pull you, your shopping, or passengers along and up the hills with no problem (system weight limit 200kg). After all this riding, you’ll need to stop; that’s where mighty four-piston calipers (like a downhill mountain bike) slow you down safely.

Add to this features such as TurboLock that’ll prevent the electric motor being used without a pin or your app nearby, a Garmin Varia radar that’ll show and alert you on the easy-to-read display of any fast-approaching traffic, working in conjunction with the supplied mirror to help keep you aware of your surroundings and safe. 

What is a Gates belt drive? Well, all this bike needs a lot of power to keep going; some brands will use a chain drive, just like a normal bike. The problem with this is that the same motor that helps provide that lovely, easy-flowing sensation is wearing out your chain and gears much faster than on a regular bicycle. Bike and rider combined are putting out Tour de France levels of power without the team of mechanics and sponsors to sort out the maintenance. By comparison, a belt is more like a car’s cambelt, being made out of carbon and designed to last well over 15,000 miles when treated correctly. A chain might last around 1000 miles in similar usage.

They haven’t forgotten about gearing either, with a very large 380% range and simple-to-use twist-shift Enviolo gears.

We like this bike; we think it’s great, and it’s so much more fun to ride than you’d expect. A genuine car replacement that can put a smile on the face of everyone we’ve seen ride them.
